Vayne's Story

Wener (pronounced Vayner) was a late foal and at first very small, but for some reason, I would not let anyone buy him.  Eventually I broke him as a five year old.  He became my horse and he proved himself a star.  He was light and elegant, so much so that although he was always placed for his outstanding movement judges deemed him too lightly built to place first.
He was an exceptional jumper and was easily capable of jumping well over four foot as his mother Schatzel was.  He had outstanding balance and speed and could turn and jump at speed.  He won rosettes into the hundreds in his short lifetime.  He competed in cross-country, dressage, show jumping, ridden classes, pairs ridden, Working Hunter Pony, gymkhana.  He took part in many  musical rides including the 1982 Breed Show which was visited by the WHF.  Wener was an early winner of the Clifton Trophy, he also won the annual points trophy run by the Society twice.
We did not go to the Breed Show every year in those days.   He enjoyed fun rides and was a great ambassador for the Breed in the days when Haflingers were not well known.  In some dressage and jumping classes we attended, the instructor at first took no special notice of him, but as the other horses proved reluctant or difficult, the instructor always asked for Wener to go first, give a lead or show the class how things should be done.
He died of colic, complicated by pneumonia when he was just 13.  He left a gap in my life that has been difficult to fill.  Still missed, still remembered, still loved.
